ACCU Values - Diversity Statement and Code of Conduct

Diversity Statement

ACCU is committed to a culture of diversity and inclusion. We embrace and encourage our members' differences - including, but not limited to age, color, ethnicity, ability or disability, gender identity or expression, sex or sexual orientation, language, national origin, religion (or absence thereof), race, political persuasion, socio-economic status, and veteran status. ACCU will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or bullying; in any form, for any reason. Our members deserve to be treated fairly, equally and with respect, and are expected to treat others the same way.

Code of Conduct

ACCU values the participation of each member of the software development community and want all to have an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Accordingly, all people at any event held under the auspices of ACCU are expected to show respect and courtesy to all other people at the event, throughout the event. Examples of events covered under this policy include, but are not limited to, the ACCU conference, ACCU local group meetings, and ACCU social events.

To make clear what is expected, all attenders, speakers, exhibitors, organisers, and volunteers at any ACCU event are required to conform to the following Code of Conduct. Organisers are expected to ensure that it is enforced throughout the event.

ACCU is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone.

All communication should be appropriate for a professional audience including people of many different backgrounds. Sexual or discriminatory language and imagery is not appropriate for any ACCU event.

Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down other attenders. Be polite. Behave professionally. Be careful in the words that you choose. Remember that any discriminatory (as in sexist, racist, etc.) or exclusionary jokes are not appropriate for ACCU.

Harassment includes offensive communication related to gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion; sexual images in public spaces; deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording; sustained disruption of talks or other events; inappropriate physical contact; and unwelcome sexual attention.

Participants asked to stop any harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately. Under all circumstances "No" means "No."

Exhibitors and sponsors are also subject to the anti-harassment policy. In particular, exhibitors should not use sexualised images, activities, or other material. Exhibitor staff (including volunteers) should not use sexualised clothing/uniforms/costumes, or otherwise create a sexualised environment.

If a participant engages in behaviour that violates this code of conduct, event organisers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the event with no refund.

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, you should contact one of the event’s organising staff, a member of the event committee, or any member of the ACCU committee.

Should a harassment incident occur, please report it, preferably in writing. All reports will be confidential.

This generalized Code of Conduct was derived from the ACCU Conference Code of Conduct (which was derived from PyCon UK 2016 Code of Conduct which was derived from PyCon US's Code of Conduct, which was forked from the example policy on the Geek Feminism Wiki). The more specific ACCU Conference Code of Conduct will be used during the ACCU conference.
