Notes from the site administrators.: Stroustrup: What's wrong with code?

Posted by: Tim Pushman on 05 December 2006
An interesting interview with Bjarne Stroustrup in the Technology Review, covering the good, the bad and the ugly in the code world.

Bjarne's interesting take on what is right and wrong in the world of software programming. He feels the problems are not just a lack of rigor or education, but also the climate in which software is developed, where quick, buggy programming is rewarded.

He also covers some of the background on why and how he designed C++, where he sees it fitting in with software development today and the influence of Kierkegaard on the design.

When asked why software is bad, he answers: "Some software is actually pretty good by any standards. Think of the Mars Rovers, Google, and the Human Genome Project. That's quality software! [...] Our technological civilization depends on software, so if software had been as bad as its worst reputation, most of us would have been dead by now."
