<p>Sadly this magazine ceased publication recently. I think this is
a great shame, as it was definitely one of my favourite reads. It
covered many topics from user software to development tools, and in
days of old, even hardware. I found the writers very readable, and
the subject matter good.</p>
<p class="c2"><span class="remark">However it is due for a relaunch
by the current owners of the title. Francis</span></p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">C/C++ Users Journal</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>Otherwise know as the CUJ. This is a good magazine if you are
really into C++ nitty gritty. Most of the articles are fairly
leading edge, but cover topics that are applicable to the real
world. If you want to stretch your C++ knowledge then this might do
it.</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">C++ Report</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>This is what I call leading edge C++. I find the articles in
here more on the edge of research and not quite applicable to my
job. Expect the stuff in here to become commonplace in the future,
but not right now.</p>
<p class="c2"><span class="remark">Also now contains a substantial
section on Patterns.</span></p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">Communications of the ACM</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>Also known as 'CACM'. Get this one by joining the Association of
Computer Machinery. A good read about the industry and good
programming articles. I like this one so far. Try looking at
<a href="http://www.acm.org" target="_top">www.acm.org</a> for more
information.</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">Dr. Dobbs Journal</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>A fine news-stand magazine. Covers many topics from applications
to coding, in many languages. There is lots of good nitty gritty
stuff in here for the techie.</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">Embedded Systems Programming</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>As it says, for the embedded programmer. Not too heavy on
articles, but some good ones crop up. Really only useful if you are
an embedded programmer.</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">EXE</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>A British programmers magazine!. Good coverage of quite a few
different topics. Quite a lot of PC database content, a little unix
and some C/C++. Good to keep abreast of what is happening in many
fields.</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">IBM Systems Journal</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>I've heard of good reports that have first appeared in this, but
have never managed to obtain a copy.</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">IEEE Computer</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>An overview of the computer business. You get this when you
become an associate member of the IEEE Computer Society. A
reasonable read. Have a look on <a href="http://www.computer.org"
target="_top">www.computer.org</a> for more information about this
and other IEEE magazines below.</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">IEEE Software</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>I like this one. Nice articles on real world practices. Not all
to my tastes, but some good book reviews, programming, management
and work philosophy.</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">IEEE Transactions on Software
Engineering.</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>Subscription from the IEEE Computer Society. This is a small
periodical that contains very academic papers. I've found few
articles that appeal to me here. Most articles seem to centre
around software testing and formal methods. I've just swapped my
subscription for 'IEEE Micro'</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">Microprocessor Report</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>If you want to see what is going on in the world of
Microprocessors then this is the biz. Covers new chips and designs.
Only problem is that this is one expensive magazine, and you get
very little paper.</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">Microsoft Systems Journal</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>As you would expect, heavily based on MS software. Most content
seems to be on Visual C/C++ and MFC classes. Probably essential if
you are an MFC programmer.</p>
</dd>
<dt><span class="term">Software Practice and Experience</span></dt>
<dd>
<p>I only have the online versions of this (thanks to an ACCU
offer), but it seems to have a lot of good programming
articles.</p>
